Belinda Everingham: Bondi Wash

Belinda Everingham: Bondi Wash

Since 2013, Bondi Wash has been creating unique plant-based products using fragrant Australian botanicals, with ranges for body care, home cleaning and pets.

The brains behind the brand is Belinda Everingham, a long-time local. When she’s not hard at work managing the company, you can find her enjoying all that she loves about Bondi - the beaches, the parks, the shopping, the friendly laid-back diverse locals and the strong sense of community.

How did the idea for Bondi Wash come about?

It was actually a bit of an ‘a-ha’ moment. Up in Far North Queensland reading Perfume by Patrick Suskind which is all about one man’s quest for the perfect scent – set in Paris and Grasse, the home of fragrance and beauty based on their flora like lavender and rose. I was surrounded up there by all these native plants I hadn’t heard of. It got me wondering whether we could create fragrance and beauty products from Australian native plants.

What is it about Bondi that made it the right place for your business?

Living here and being able to walk to work is a luxury. But it is a highly creative community with so many people doing interesting things. The visual beauty of the coastline is really inspiring. And believe it or not, the streets are full of native trees that bring inspiration – wattle, paperbark, banksia for example are all in abundance here.

Do you get involved with other Bondi businesses?

We have had so much support from locals. Initially it was our local friends who supported the business and to whom we are still grateful. Gould Street shops chat to each other and are very supportive. Special mentions though to Uashmama who held our hand opening the Gould Store, to the Dinosaur Designs team who live locally and have given us great advice, and to Mr Jason Grant who has been our stylist since the beginning. We love working with him and other locals.

What's your morning routine?

Some gentle yoga moves, get coffee and bread with the dog, make school lunches, chat to our warehouse which opens early and deal with some of the overnight emails.

What’s the one Bondi Wash product you can’t live without?

The Purifying Night Balm. It’s new to our range but I have been using the samples from development for a few years now. I lather it on before bed and love how soft my skin feels in the morning.

How do you stay warm in winter?

Gentle jogging with Roger the dog in the morning, hot chocolates from Earth Food Store in the afternoon and Netflix in bed in the evening.

What do you think Bondi will be like in 10 years?

Oh I really hope it doesn’t get overdeveloped. It’s changed a lot since we first moved here – but for the better. Even the beaches and ocean are cleaner now than then. I hope it doesn’t change too much – but we would be happy to see a few more creative retailers in the area - maybe a Campbell & Hall store?

In Bondi, where do you go for:
Food? Bills, Drake, Fish Bowl, Earth Food Store, Banana Blossom - we are spoilt for choice
Coffee? Tin Pin Bakery (Kush is the best), Gusto
Drinks? Bondi Hardware, Ravesis, Corner House
