Mulga The Artist: Bondi Art

Mulga The Artist: Bondi Art

Last year we had a chat to artist and all round cool guy Joel, aka Mulga The Artist. He's been a pretty busy chap since then. He got on board with the Toyota Australia instant immortals campaign #ohwhatafeeling for the Rio Olympics, including painting murals of athletes such as Ryan Greyson and Dylan Alcott. Not to mention creatively putting his artwork on puzzles, jewellery, Bondi walls, and even a children's book...

So, you’ve been pretty busy since we last spoke, what’s been happening?

I’ve been painting lots of murals, working on some cool projects and I even went to Japan to show the Japanese the art of Mulga. I wrote a children’s picture book as well.

Congrats on the new Bondi mural at North end. How did that all happen?

I have been painting murals at the Bondi seawall for a few years now, my fourth one of a big gorilla head is currently up there. Through doing that the good people in the arts department at Waverley Council became familiar with my work and asked me to make some art for the flyer of the Festival of the Winds (the annual kite flying festival at Bondi Beach). They then asked me to paint the mural at the north end incorporating 'Kite Beard Kevin' who I drew for the flyer and a bunch of sea creatures plus some big BONDI text. I feel very honoured to be able to paint such a great wall on the beach at Bondi.

Last year you mentioned a kids book was in the works, how did that go and where can we get our hands on it!?

It went great! It’s called Mulga’s Magical Musical Creatures and I am releasing it this Saturday (24th September 2016) with a big launch party. The original artworks from the book will be on display, live music from the book will be performed and food and drink will be enjoyed by one and all. Held at Ambush Gallery in Chippendale's Central Park Mall the event runs from 4 pm to 8pm. It is a kid friendly event with fun activities for the kids and big people as well.

The book features a whole bunch of radical animals playing instruments and explores the topic of creativity and where it comes from.

It will also be available from my website and from good book shops.
